Please read through ALL OF THE TABS below to make sure you have an understanding of tryouts and the requirements of all three team levels.

Tryouts for all titles will be Saturday August 26th and Sunday August 27th. Tryouts will take place each day from 7 pm - 10 pm ET. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to check-in. If you are unable to attend either date please see the alternate tryout section below.

Tryout location:

Tryouts will be held online on the Pace Esports Discord server: https://discord.gg/S8fKDwTt5P. Players will play remotely on their own devices.

1. A Nintendo Switch with a copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
2. A Nintendo Switch LAN Adapter & ethernet cable for LAN connection.
3. A Nintendo Switch Online Subscription
4. Must have filled out a tryout application prior to tryouts.
5. Must be a current or incoming Pace student.
6. Must be available on Tuesday nights. See the Varsity/Academy/Club tabs above for more information about practice schedules and match times.

How will tryouts be run?

Check-in:
• Players will join the SSBU “Check-in” voice channel in the “Tryouts” category on the Pace University Esports Discord at 6:30 pm ET.
• There will be Game Officers and Tryout staff in the channel to check you in and take attendance. Last-minute entries who did not fill out a form may not be able to be put into a game on day 1 unless there are absences.

Layout:
Prior to the first Tryout date, our game officers will be creating tryout round-robin groups based on prior-knowledge information (PGStats tournament data, Pace Smash Society tournament data, last semester’s ECAC performance, game officers’ knowledge of the players, etc.).
• The groups will have an even distribution of skill to ensure that no one group is stronger than another to the best of the game officers’ abilities.
• Players will play a Best-of-5 set with every person in their round-robin group and report the score of each set to the Tryout staff.

For the second Tryout date, our game officers will create a different set of round-robin groups based on the results of the first day’s round-robin sets.
• The groups will have an even distribution of day 1 records (Ex: A group would consist of players who went 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, and 0-3 respectively).
• Game officers and Tryout staff will try their best to avoid having to play against the same person on both days, but there may not be any guarantee that this will be the case for every player.
• Players will play a Best-of-5 set with every other person in their round-robin group and report the score of each set to the Tryout staff.

Games:
• All players in their round-robin pools will be given the order that they will play their sets. Players MUST play their sets in the order outlined by the Tryout staff.
• These tryouts will use the Stage List that was used in the Spring 2022 ECAC SSBU Leagues.
- Starter Stages: Battlefield, Final Destination, Town & City, Pokemon Stadium 2, Smashville.
- Counterpick Stages: Hollow Bastion, Kalos, Small Battlefield, Yoshi’s Story.

For each set:
• One player will create an arena with tournament rule settings (3 Stocks, 7 minutes, no items, etc.), then will provide the ID and Password to their opponent.
• Once both players are in the arena, they will strike starter stages (1-2-1) until one stage is left. Alternatively, players can choose to “Gentleman” to one of the Starter Stages for the first game.
• After a game in the set finishes, the player who won will ban three of the nine legal stages. The player who lost that game will choose one of the six remaining stages for the next game.
• This process will repeat until one player has won three games in the set. That player will be the winner of that set and should report the score of the set to the Tryout staff.

Evaluation:

• The Game Officers and Tryout Staff will be in Discord calls with the round-robin groups they’ve been assigned to for evaluation.
• Everyone’s round-robin set counts and record will be recorded from both tryout days (this is not the only metric being looked at, we know that other factors may be present during the tryouts such as a bad mental day or bad in-game matchups).
• To best evaluate your abilities, we will ask you to play in conditions like those experienced during practice and competition. We recognize that practices and competitions may be stressful but that these are critical components to competitive esports. Therefore, we emphasize that players focus on presenting their teamwork, technical skill, and game knowledge to the best of their abilities.

Evaluation areas:
-
Communication & Teamwork
- Technical Skill & Mechanics
- Game Knowledge & Understanding
- Performance under pressure
- Leadership & Attitude
- Game Rank

Alternate tryouts:

If you are unable to make tryouts, players may submit a video prior to the tryout dates which includes the following:
• A display of the player’s prior performances in a competitive setting.
• A display of the player’s skill within the game (Ex: a past replay).
• A display of callouts.
• Must be at least 20 minutes.
If this doesn’t style doesn’t work for you please reach out to the SSBU Game Officers to work out another way for you to tryout.
